Urlar, 2007
"Urlar" is a new series of charcoal and graphite drawings on rice paper incorporating found images. These aerial views of European sites were photographed by military pilots during WW2.
The sites include burning cities and concentration camps among others. "Urlar" in Irish means "floor", in early Welsh music "urlar" is "ground." Within the surface of the drawing,
the suggested drawn body and the images of aerial views overlap, proposing a direct visceral and formal interaction between surfaces of paper, skin and terrain. Acts of mapping happen under
military conditions, the flattening of the view and the distance of the seer/pilot are juxtaposed with the bodily intimacy and proximity.
